Yup mine broke on my 3.5L last year and replaced it with a used one off another 300 that was being parted out.

As for taking it apart, the actual sunglass holder lid/part does not come off without breaking it, (I know that from experience because I tried to fix it first) but in order to remove it just pry and pull from the edges. Nothing will break since the only thing up there is one or two plugs that are for your map lights and of course you might have an extra plug if you have a sunroof or Uconnect. Just don't pull it all the way down since obviously you will need to unplug any wires/connections first.

If you don't use it you could replace it with a gauge pod from speedlogix.
